You Say Tomato, I Say Tomato
You know that song…”You say tomato, I say tomato (tuh-mah-toe)”?
Tomatoes are a funny thing to me; I’ve always liked the many forms a tomato comes in – cooked, stewed, sundried, etc. – but I’ve never been one to enjoy it in its raw form. Despite my distaste for a tomato in its natural state though, I tend to crave them every once in awhile. I realize that makes absolutely NO sense – who craves things they don’t even like? Well, apparently I do.
Today was one of those days when a hankering for raw tomatoes was nagging me all morning long. I just kept thinking about them; something about a tomato sounded so amazingly delicious. I combined little organic tomatoes with a few simple ingredients and had a lunch that was out-of-this-world!
I cut tiny tomatoes into smaller chunks, and combined them with freshly torn basil, sea salt, a splash of extra virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar.
Next, I took some crusty bread and drizzled a little extra virgin olive oil over it. I stuck it in a frying pan until it got brown and toasty.
The final product:
YUM. This was so good, there are no words to describe it. It was so tasty, in fact, I actually had one more, but mindlessly forgot to take a picture. I know it’s simple, and it’s probably something that the normal person has made a million times. Not me though! Us tomato haters stay away from dishes like this. Until today.
On the side, I had some fresh mozzarella cheese with sea salt (x2):
Cheese to the rescue (that’s for you, Sara).
Oh, and my breakfast didn’t hold me over well at all! I got hungry around 10:00AM, and broke for a snack around 10:30 -
Once again, my appetite is in rare (not so rare?) form today, and I feel like a bottomless-pit. It’s cool. I’m embracing it (because really, what else is there to do when you feel like this?!).
Do you know anyone that pronounces tomato, “tuh-mah-toe”? I’ve always wondered if there is anyone in the world that really says it like that.
Back to work…only a few hours left!

Can’t go wrong with fresh, seasonal “tuh-mah-toes”
I think that you are coming around to actually like toms
haha, great question! I’m curious myself.
I’m a huge TO-MATO fan, especially when they are fresh, not mealy, and slightly sweet, delicious!
I’ve only just recently come to love tomatoes too… Definitely was a tomater-hater as a youngin. That dish looks incredible though, I would definitely be wantin’ some! Gosh I sure wish I had a basil plant!
Have a spectacular Monday!

Wow what a colorful delicious looking breakfast! I’m not a huge tomato eater. I can’t eat them alone, but I love them with other tastes combined.
Oh goodness what a delicious recipe!!
And to answer your question- nope you can’t taste the veggies at all! About a cups worth of spinach doesn’t change the banana taste at all
Hey, I’m like that way with tomatoes too! I love them cooked, stewed, in sauces, ketchup, etc. but do not like them raw (although sweet grape tomatoes make an exception). AND I even get weird cravings for them too, haha!
Love the dish you created. It does sound fabulous, especially with the crusty bread and mozzarella cheese! Oh so Italian
Yum! Looks great!
i say to-mah-to just when i want to obnoxious which is quite often
tomatoes are one of my favorite veggies ever!!
Its probably my favorite flavor!
love that PB Larabar
Oh wow, those look so good!!
Totally digging your simple tomato salad… And when produce is so good and in season, what more would you need to do to it?
Your lunch looks amazing, so colorful and pretty!! I have been on a tomato kick here lately too because someone gave us a TON of garden tomatoes that I had to get used up. There’s nothing better than a good tomato!!
I’m adding you to my blog roll btw, I love your blog!!
In singapore, I lol-ed when ppl called tomatoes “Do-MA-DDO”!! Hahaha! but however way they are pronounced, I LOVE them!
I can taste your tomatoes from here! Your pictures are fabulous!
I have been eating the basil/tomato combo all summer because they are both plentiful in my garden. I’m not even close to tired of it!!!
I LOVE tomatoes!!!! Awesome picture of your tomatoes… I wish I could reach into my laptop and eat them…
I’m glad you enjoyed them…
And I don’t think you can call yourself a tomato hater any longer…
I say tu-mar-toe (most Brits do) where as in the US it’s pronounced ta-may-toe. It’s like we say vi-tamins you say vie-tamins, we say roote you say route. I could go on and on.
This looks so delicious and I am a tomato lover–I am making it for lunch today!!!!
